The dot com companies of the late 1990’s faced one of the largest industry economic downturns in our history.
Now lovingly referred to as the “Dot Com Bubble”, it’s lessons are still fresh in our minds and the resultant ’survival of the fittest’ produced companies like Google, a reborn Apple and many innovative markets emerged, like Social Networking.
In other words, the People (the Market) voted, and what survived that downturn and thrived in the ensuing years reflects who we are as a species, a culture, a country and a world full of ‘individuals’.
We wanted to reach out and connect with those we cared about and be able to find information, services and people without fuss. To enjoy access to an enormous amount of good quality content created by people of passion and wit, of complexity and simplicity. The content revolution was upon us and the influx of user generated content brought with it turmoil in other industries. One ‘red hot’ example being the recording industry.
Grade A (aka: Hot Selling) Content was now being created and distributed *without* them (see Trent Rezner’s 2008 Album Releases) through non-centralized, democratic and high traffic web site channels like Amazon Web Services, EBay Partner Network and Social Networks like MySpace, Facebook and YouTube and the iTunes Digital Content delivery services. Even books have their e-books, audio-books and web based formats!
It won’t be long now when amateur writers, movie and record producers start becoming as skilled as the most experienced industry veterans, and the next content revolution wipes out these industries completely. However, they will go out to create even bigger markets by providing people with the tools, connectivity, technology, services and information to build, inform, create and secure a better future. This means better music, cars, movies, books, signs, farms, foods, buildings, banks, websites, computers, candy, furniture, restaurants and cities for both us, and our children.
That is what it all boils down to.
Can your business or organization help do that? Then no economy can hold your business down! Your People (Customers) are swelling it up! Holding it up! Keeping it up and growing it!
The technology industry as a whole was a young upstart only 30 years ago, and today it’s children are building the next generation tools for ‘our’ children. To survive this economic environment, you must provide the ‘human element’ in whatever product or service you are providing.
Websites that offer ‘human’ insight into the value proposition of the business are seeing the greatest return in steady and increasing income while their competitors are closing doors. This is easily achieved with today’s technology in the form of commenting systems, user forums, social networking tools on site and interactive maps all linked to customer generated reviews, experiences, rants, raves and story-telling.
The human element is what takes us to Amazon.com to buy a book or to eBay or Craigslist to shop for a gift. The company becomes a transparent entity at the center of the community that forms around it and fosters sales, loyalty and evangelists. It profits while it’s competitors still have ‘Brochure Websites’ and ‘Buy Buy Buy’ Websites, wondering of course why No One Is Buying.
